Is This $31 Dual Band Radio Any Good?
Finding a good radio usually costs a lot of money. You might spend hundreds of dollars on a name brand. I found something different on eBay recently. This is an unboxing of the Baofeng UV-3R 2-way radio. It is a tiny VHF and UHF walkie-talkie that costs very little. For only $31, I wanted to see what comes in the box and if it feels like a real tool.
A Budget Radio from Overseas
Buying gear from eBay can be a gamble. This radio was imported from Hong Kong. The price is the first thing people notice. At $31, it is hard to believe it works. Many radios in this price range are just toys. This one claims to be a real dual-band radio for hobbyists.
The shipping was fast for an import. The box arrived in good shape. It did not look like a cheap knock-off from the outside. I wanted to see if the low price meant low quality. Letâs look at what is inside the package.

Opening the Box
The first thing I found was a small thank you note. It came with the sellerâs business card. This is a nice touch for a cheap item. It makes the seller seem more professional.
Next, I pulled out the user guide. Many cheap radios have manuals that are hard to read. They are often translated poorly. This manual is in English and it looks pretty good. You can actually understand the instructions. This is helpful for new users who do not know how to program a radio.
How Much Does it Weigh?
When I picked up the box, I noticed something right away. It felt very light. I thought the box might be empty. The radio itself is also very light. It feels as light as a feather in your hand.
This is good if you want to carry it all day. You can put it in your pocket and forget it is there. It does not feel like a heavy brick like some older radios. Some people might think light means it is weak. We will have to see how it holds up over time.
Physical Size and Look
The Baofeng UV-3R is very small. It is much tinier than I thought it would be. I have other radios, like the Wouxun models. When you put them side by side, the Baofeng looks like a toy.
The radio fits easily in the palm of your hand. It is much shorter and thinner than a standard handheld radio. This makes it a great choice for people with small hands. It also works well for people who want to hide their gear. You can clip it to a belt and it wonât get in the way.
Battery and Assembly
The battery for this radio is also tiny. It looks like a battery from an old cell phone. Putting the radio together is mostly easy. I thought I had to unscrew a part to put the battery in. I was wrong about that.
The battery just slides into the back. However, the battery clip does not feel very strong. It did not want to stay in place at first. I had to push it a few times to make it click. Once it is in, it stays, but it feels a bit thin. You should be careful when swapping batteries so you do not break the plastic.
The Tiny Antenna
The antenna is just as small as the radio. It is one of the shortest antennas I have seen on a dual-band device. This helps keep the radio small in your pocket.
I checked to see if I could use my other antennas on it. I tried to swap the antenna with one from a Wouxun radio. It did not work. The connection is different. This means you have to use the antenna it comes with. You cannot just screw on any antenna you find at a radio shop.
đĄ Want better reception?
Your antenna matters more than your radio.
Charging the Baofeng UV-3R
Charging this radio is a bit different than other models. The box includes a small charging base. It also comes with a power adapter. The adapter puts out 5 volts at 500 milliamps.
The charging setup is a little strange. There is a recessed plug deep inside the base. You have to use an adapter to make it work. It feels a bit messy or âclunkyâ to put together. But for $31, I cannot complain much. It gets the job done and keeps the battery full.
Extra Accessories in the Box
The package comes with more than just a radio. I found a few extra items at the bottom of the box. These items make the deal even better.
The Earphone and Mic
The box includes an earphone and microphone combo. This lets you talk without holding the radio to your face. It has a small push-to-talk (PTT) button on the cord. I have not used one like this before. It is a nice addition for someone who wants to use the radio hands-free.
The Carry Strap
There is also a long carry strap included. It looks like a lanyard you wear around your neck. The ribbon has beautiful Chinese writing on it. It is very long for such a small radio. You could hang the radio around your neck while you work or hike. It adds a bit of style to the device.
Comparing the UV-3R to Other Radios
I compared this radio to my Wouxun UV-1G. The size difference is the biggest takeaway. The Baofeng is much more portable. Here is how they compare:
Feature | Baofeng UV-3R | Standard Wouxun |
|---|---|---|
Price | Very Low ($31) | Moderate to High |
Size | Tiny | Large/Standard |
Weight | Very Light | Heavy |
Antenna | Proprietary | Standard SMA |
Portability | Fits in pocket | Needs a belt holster |
First Impressions of the Radio
The Baofeng UV-3R seems like a great deal for the money. It is a dual-band radio that fits anywhere. You can keep it in your pocket all day without feeling tired. The build quality is okay for the price, even if the battery clip is a bit weak.
The box comes with everything you need to start. You get the radio, the battery, and the charger. You even get a headset and a lanyard. It is a complete kit for a very low price. If you need a small radio for a backup, this might be a good choice.
Is It Worth It?
If you are looking for a cheap way to get into radio, this is a strong pick. It is not a heavy-duty radio for a construction site. It is a small, light tool for light use. The $31 price tag makes it very easy to try out.
The tiny size is the best part. Most dual-band radios are bulky. This one is different. It shows that radios are getting smaller and cheaper every year. Just be careful with the battery clip and the charger setup.
If you want to see the unboxing for yourself, watch the video below. It shows exactly how small this radio really is.
Final Thoughts on the UV-3R
This radio is a fun piece of gear. It is amazing that you can get a dual-band device for such a low cost. It is perfect for people who want a radio that does not take up much space. It is light, easy to carry, and comes with plenty of extras.
The manual being in English is a huge help. You wonât have to guess how to use the buttons. While the charging setup is a bit odd, it works. For anyone on a budget, the Baofeng UV-3R is worth a look. It is the tiniest dual-bander I have ever seen.
