In fact, a dedicated community of operators continues to enjoy the classic sound of amplitude modulation, often using restored vintage equipment alongside modern transceivers. If you’ve never operated AM before, finding activity can be the biggest challenge. Unlike SSB, where conversations are spread across large portions of each band, AM operators tend to gather on a handful of well-known calling frequencies and informal meeting spots.
Amateur radio operators who enjoy Amplitude Modulation (AM) have a dedicated following, especially on the HF bands. While SSB dominates most voice communication today, AM offers a warm, rich sound that many hams prefer for rag chews and vintage/boat-anchor operation.

Most Active AM Bands in 2025
- 40 meters – 7.290 MHz
Currently, the most consistently active AM frequency worldwide, especially in Europe and North America. You’ll almost always find someone there, day or night. - 75/80 meters – 3.885 MHz (primary NA) and 3.860 MHz
The “classic” North American AM hangout in the evenings and winter nights. Huge signals with vintage gear and boat anchors. - 20 meters – 14.286 MHz
The international AM calling frequency. Great for DX when propagation is good. - 15 meters – 21.420 MHz
Seeing a big resurgence with the current solar maximum (Solar Cycle 25 peak in 2025). Often wide-open worldwide during the day. - 10 meters – 29.000 MHz
When the band is open (which it frequently is in 2025), you’ll hear very strong AM signals, often using converted CB gear or homebrew rigs.
Regional Variations & Tips
- North America: 3.885 and 7.290 are almost always active in the evening/local night.
- Europe: Heavy activity on 7.290 and 3.760–3.800 kHz (varies by country allocation).
- Australia/New Zealand: 3.776 MHz and 7.290 MHz are popular.
- Stay ±10–20 kHz away from the exact calling frequency once you make contact (QSY) to keep the calling frequency clear.
6-Meter and 2-Meter AM
Although rare, some AM activity still exists:
- 6 m: 50.400 MHz (historical AM calling frequency) and 50.300–50.525 MHz
- 2 m: 144.300–144.500 MHz (local AM nets in some areas, especially with vintage gear)

For the dyed-in-the-wool old-timers, AM isn’t just a mode; it’s a religion. They’ll tell you, often at great length and with a misty eye, that real ham radio ended the day the last glowing 833A was switched off for an IC-7300. To them, AM is the sound of their youth: the warm, velvet distortion of a properly modulated plate-modulated final, the soft 120 Hz hum riding under a DX signal, the satisfying over-modulated roar when the audio peaks hit 150 %. They love the bandwidth, the carrier you can actually see on the scope, and the way a big signal fills the room like a pipe organ.
They’ll fire up a 1940s boatanchor that weighs as much as a refrigerator, let the tubes warm up for five minutes, and then casually work the world on a pair of 809s while sipping coffee from a 50-year-old QSL mug. SSB, to these grizzled warriors, is “that skinny phone,” efficient but soulless. AM is where the soul of ham radio still lives, and they’ll defend it to their last watt.
