If you own an Icom IC-7300 and want to get on JT65 (or similar JT-mode digital operations), this guide is for you. Many JT65 programs didn’t have native support for the IC-7300 when it was new, so a simple workaround was needed.
In this tutorial, we’ll set up the radio and software using just one USB cable for both CAT control and audio. No extra interfaces or cables required.
Why This Setup Works
The IC-7300 appears as a USB audio codec and a virtual COM port on your computer. By tricking the software into thinking it’s an Icom IC-7100 (which was already supported) and making a few radio menu changes, you can get reliable PTT, frequency control, and bidirectional audio.
I demonstrated this method successfully in 2016 and still applies today for older JT65/JT9 software.
Prerequisites
- Icom IC-7300 with the latest firmware (at the time of the video).
- USB cable connected between the radio’s USB port and your computer.
- Icom USB driver installed (download from the Icom website).
- JT65 software installed (WSJT-X, JT65-HF, or similar — the settings shown are generic but work with most).
- Windows PC (examples use Windows Device Manager).
Step 1: Install and Verify the USB Driver
- Install the official Icom USB driver for the IC-7300.
- Connect the radio via USB and power it on.
- Open Windows Device Manager → Ports (COM & LPT).
- Note the COM port number assigned to the “Icom IC-7300” or “USB Serial Device” (example: COM8).
If you don’t see a COM port, reinstall the driver or try a different USB cable/port.
Step 2: Configure the Software (Radio Tab)
Most JT65 software has a “Radio” or “Rig” settings section. Use these exact settings:
Setting | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Radio Type | Icom IC-7100 | This is the key workaround — the IC-7300 is close enough in protocol |
Baud Rate | 9600 | Default and reliable |
COM Port | Your port (e.g., COM8) | Check Device Manager |
Poll Interval | Default | Usually 1–2 seconds |
DTR | OFF / Not used | Not needed with USB |
RTS | OFF / Not used | Not needed with USB |
PTT Method | CAT or RTS (test both) | CAT is preferred |
Tip: After changing settings, click the Test or Test CAT button. It should turn green if communication is successful.
Next, test PTT:
- Click Test PTT.
- You should hear the relays click inside the IC-7300.
- If not, double-check the COM port and baud rate.
Step 3: Audio Settings in Software
Set the audio devices correctly:
Audio Setting | Recommended Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Input (Receive) | USB Audio Codec | The radio’s built-in sound card |
Output (Transmit) | USB Audio Codec | Same device for TX audio |
After saving, restart the software completely. Look for an audio level indicator (often an orange bar at the bottom). If you see incoming signals or noise, audio is working.
Step 4: Radio Menu Settings (IC-7300)
Enter the IC-7300’s menu system and make these changes:
Connectors Menu:
- CI-V Baud Rate: 9600
- CI-V Address: 88 (critical — default is usually 94h for IC-7300)
- CI-V Transceive: OFF (recommended)
- CI-V USB Port: Linked to Remote (or USB)
- CI-V Output for ANT: ON or OFF (some users recommend OFF to avoid errors)
- USB Serial Function: CI-V
- USB Keying (CW/RTTY): OFF
Data Mode Settings:
- DATA MOD: USB
- ACC MOD: MIC (or as needed)
Most other level settings (RF power, monitor, etc.) can stay at defaults for digital modes. Set your power output low (20–50W) for JT65 to avoid overheating.
Step 5: Final Testing
- Tune to a JT65 frequency (e.g., 14.076 MHz on 20m).
- Decode some signals — the orange audio bar should show activity.
- Make a test QSO or at least transmit a few times.
- Monitor the radio’s ALC and power meters to ensure clean transmission.
Common Troubleshooting Tips
- No CAT control — Wrong COM port, baud rate mismatch, or CI-V address not set to 88.
- No audio — Wrong USB Audio Codec selected, or software needs restart.
- PTT not working — Try different PTT method (CAT vs. RTS) or check USB cable.
- Intermittent connection — Lower the poll interval or disable CI-V Transceive.
- Software not recognizing the radio — Ensure the Icom driver is installed correctly.
Bonus: Operating Tips for JT65 on the IC-7300
- Use USB mode on the radio (not DATA mode for some older software).
- Keep power at 30–40% to stay clean.
- The single USB cable handles everything — CAT, PTT, and audio — making portable or minimalist setups easy.
This configuration turned the IC-7300 into a very capable digital mode radio back in 2016, and the same principles still apply for legacy software today.
