Them Crazy Drake R8 Blues

Uh oh, I’m in trouble again. I’ve got a certain itch that I need to scratch, and that itch is the Drake R8 receiver. What is it that I have that compels me to covet top of the line radios from a bygone era? Not that bygone mind you, these radios were produced in the 1990’s but Drake is no longer in business and these models are becoming harder and harder to find. They are well known great performers with exemplary audio.

It’s not like I need another shortwave receiver either. Let’s see, I have a JRC NRD-545, an Icom 756-Pro, and Icom IC-7000, three Radio Shack receivers, DX-394/AX-190/DX-150, several portables, oh and two SDRs, the WinRadio Excalibur G31DDC and a Flex-3000. That’s a lot of receive power!

I guess I’m finding my collecting niche. The Drake is going to sit right beside my NRD-545 so I plan on having some good comparison videos to put up on my YouTube channel.  Watch for those.

Here is a picture of the actual R8 I just purchased on eBay-

I’ve already made space for it in the shack, now we wait for delivery!
