VP8LP in the Falkland Islands

Today I made another milestone contact, this time into the Falkland Islands! Using my Icom IC-756 Pro and a crappy wire antenna tossed in the trees I was able to get a 58 signal report from Bob, VP8LP with only 100 watts.


Here is the plot of the probability of making this contact from VOACAP Online. I read about 70%, as this contact was at 0200 UTC on 14 MHz.

As you can see, this is a really long trip. About 7,000 miles. Many others were calling, including some lid who didn’t know phonetics and kept calling over top of the guy. All in all, it took me about 10 minutes to breakthrough, but it was totally worth it!
