Cell networks get overloaded. Towers lose power. Internet service becomes unreliable. Even when infrastructure stays online, congestion alone can make smartphones almost useless.

I’ve personally seen cheap FRS radios become unreliable only a few city blocks apart once terrain and buildings entered the equation. On the other hand, I’ve also seen modest 5-watt GMRS radios communicate across an entire rural township simply because they were connected to good vehicle-mounted antennas.

That’s the first lesson most beginners eventually learn:

The antenna often matters more than the radio itself.

FRS Radios: Better Than Most People Think

Don’t hate on me

FRS radios get dismissed by experienced hobbyists sometimes, but I think that’s a mistake.

For average families, basic FRS radios are often the most practical starting point because they require absolutely no technical knowledge. There’s no licensing process, no programming software, and no learning curve beyond turning the radio on and selecting a channel.

That simplicity matters.

In an emergency, stress changes everything. People forget procedures. They panic. They make mistakes. A radio system that feels intuitive under stress is incredibly valuable.

Good FRS radios work well for:

  • family coordination
  • camping trips
  • local neighborhood communication
  • vehicle convoys
  • short-range emergency use

The downside is range. FRS operates at relatively low power and uses fixed antennas, which limits overall performance. In open rural terrain, they may work surprisingly well. In cities or wooded environments, expectations need to stay realistic.

Still, dismissing FRS entirely misses the point. A simple radio that everyone can operate confidently is often more useful than a complicated setup nobody understands.

One of the better options right now is the Motorola T600 series. They’re rugged, waterproof, float if dropped in water, and have solid battery life. Midland’s higher-end X-Talker models are also decent choices and tend to perform better than the ultra-cheap bargain-bin radios flooding online marketplaces.

This is where emergency communications start becoming genuinely useful beyond local neighborhood distances.

A quality GMRS handheld paired with a good antenna can perform remarkably well. Add a mobile radio installed in a vehicle with a roof-mounted antenna, and performance improves dramatically again.

That’s because elevation and antenna efficiency are everything in VHF/UHF communications.

Many preparedness newcomers assume transmitter power is the primary factor. It isn’t. A poorly positioned 50-watt radio can easily underperform a lower-powered radio using a better antenna setup.

That’s why vehicle-mounted systems are so effective. Even a modest magnetic roof antenna creates a far better signal environment than a handheld antenna sitting close to the human body.

For vehicles, the Midland MXT275 remains popular for good reason. Pair it with a decent external antenna and it will outperform handheld radios by a massive margin.

Ham Radio Offers the Most Capability — But Also the Most Complexity

Amateur radio is where things become much more powerful and much more technical at the same time.

This is the world of repeaters, field antennas, digital modes, APRS tracking, emergency nets, and long-distance HF communication. During major disasters, amateur radio operators are often among the last functioning communications systems standing.

But ham radio is not a magic solution, and it absolutely requires commitment.

This is where many preparedness articles become unrealistic. They recommend amateur radio casually without acknowledging the learning curve involved. In reality, ham radio requires:

  • licensing
  • programming knowledge
  • operating practice
  • understanding frequencies and repeaters
  • familiarity with radio etiquette
  • battery management discipline

You cannot simply buy a ham radio, toss it into a closet for two years, and expect to operate it effectively during a crisis.

That said, for people willing to learn, amateur radio offers unmatched flexibility.

A solid handheld like the Yaesu FT-60R remains one of the best preparedness radios ever made. It’s rugged, dependable, easy to operate once programmed, and has an excellent reputation for durability. The Yaesu VX-6R is another outstanding option, especially if waterproofing matters to you.

Then there’s the Baofeng question.

The Truth About those Baofeng Radios

No preparedness radio discussion is complete without mentioning Baofeng.

These radios are everywhere now. Millions have been sold, and there’s a reason for that: they’re incredibly cheap and surprisingly capable for the price.

Baofeng radios often suffer from:

  • mediocre receiver filtering
  • poor resistance to interference
  • inconsistent quality control
  • weaker durability compared to major brands

In RF-dense urban environments, overloaded receivers can become frustrating very quickly. Strong nearby signals may interfere with weaker stations, and overall receiver performance is simply not in the same league as radios from Yaesu, Icom, or Kenwood.

Still, I understand exactly why people buy them. I own three.

They’re inexpensive enough to:

  • keep as backups
  • store in vehicle kits
  • loan to friends
  • use for training
  • build inexpensive family setups

And because they’re so common, accessories, spare batteries, antennas, and programming support are everywhere.

I don’t consider Baofengs ideal primary emergency radios. But as affordable backup tools, they absolutely have a place.

Repeaters Are Useful — But Dangerous to Depend On

One mistake I see repeatedly in preparedness circles is overreliance on Repeaters.

Repeaters are fantastic when they’re functioning properly. They dramatically extend communication range by retransmitting signals from elevated locations.

But repeaters also depend on infrastructure:

  • tower sites
  • power systems
  • maintenance
  • backup batteries
  • sometimes internet connectivity

Some repeaters are extremely resilient and maintain emergency power systems. Others fail quickly during outages.

That’s why every emergency communications plan should include simplex operation. Simplex means direct radio-to-radio communication with no infrastructure involved whatsoever.

If your entire communications plan depends on repeaters staying online, your plan has a major weakness.

Battery Management Is Where Most Emergency Plans Fail

Preparedness communications usually fail because of power problems, not radio problems.

People spend hundreds on radios and then forget about long-term charging strategy entirely.

That’s a mistake.

When evaluating emergency radios, I strongly prefer models that support:

  • USB charging
  • readily available spare batteries
  • vehicle charging options
  • common accessories

Proprietary charging cradles become liabilities very quickly during prolonged outages.

A serious radio kit should include spare battery packs, power banks, charging cables, and ideally some form of solar charging capability for extended emergencies.

Battery conservation matters too. In real emergencies, experienced operators don’t leave radios transmitting constantly. They establish scheduled check-in windows to conserve power and reduce unnecessary traffic.

That’s the kind of practical operational detail many preparedness guides completely ignore.

Your Communication Plan Matters More Than Your Radio

This is probably the single most important takeaway from this entire article.

The radio itself is only part of the system.

A good emergency communications plan should establish:

  • primary channels
  • backup channels
  • check-in schedules
  • meetup locations
  • communication priorities

Even simple procedures help enormously during stressful situations.

For example, a family might agree to monitor a primary GMRS channel at the top of every hour for five minutes. If communication fails, everyone automatically switches to a secondary channel.

That level of planning dramatically improves reliability during real emergencies.

Without a plan, even expensive radios quickly become chaos.

Thoughts

There’s no perfect emergency radio.

The best choice depends on:

  • your technical comfort level
  • your environment
  • your budget

  • how much training you’re willing to do

These “radios”, personal nodes and repeaters for text-based communications, offer local to regional performance, depending on the infrastructure architecture, i.e. repeaters, in a given area. The technology is low-power, completely independent of cell infrastructure, encrypted, very affordable–a personal transceiver node can be purchased for under $50. There is no licensing requirements & no subscription fees. Especially for people along major population corridors such as I5, who want to be able to reach family members who may live in a different city or even state, this system is the most robust, resilient and easily scaled system available.
